This book represents the first five years of Screen Slate, a resource for New York City moving image culture covering repertory, independent, microcinema, and gallery screenings. It features a selection of our best daily write-ups — on classics, obscurities, experiments, and discoveries — alongside several longform interviews with filmmakers and programmers. It also includes an introductory essay by Screen Slate’s founder about the history of the project offering personal perspective on a transitional period of film culture that experienced an influx of microcinemas, convergence between the film and art worlds, a sea change in 35mm and digital exhibition, and a boom in New York’s film scene. The result is a kaleidoscopic, impassioned portrait of a city in cinema.
